McCain

The Issues:

1. Abortion: He opposes abortion Rights except in cases of rape, incest or threat to the life of the mother. He also has an antiabortion voting record and feels that abortions are no longer neccessary.

2. Education: McCain supports vouchers that would allow students to attend public or private schools, including religious schools, when approved by local officials. He argues that "it's time to give middle- and lower-income parents the same right wealthier families have – to send their child to the school that best meets their needs." He also feels that parents should have the rights to choose homeschooling.

3. Dealth Penalty:Has supported expansion of the federal death penalty and limits on appeals.

4. Environment: He would like to "clean up the planet" and "make global warming a priority." Also he would reduce greenhouse emissions through a market-based system and through the development of nuclear, solar and other alternative energy sources. He supports federal funding and preservation of national parks, arguing that Americans should take "stewardship" of their "natural heritage." McCain led Senate effort to cap greenhouse gas emissions, favors tougher fuel efficiency, and favors plan that would see greenhouse gas emissions cut by 60 percent by 2050. Plus he supports more nuclear power.

5. Health Care: making generic drugs more available to consumers and wants to ease restrictions on imported drugs to make prescriptions more affordable. McCain supports tax credits to encourage individuals and families to purchase health insurance to make health insurance more affordable and says there is no mandate for universal coverage.

6. Immigration: He wants to secure the border first. Therefore, he supports border fence Also he wants to reform immigration policy so that highly skilled foreign workers are more likely to remain in the country.

7. Iraq War: McCain does not want a troop withdrawa because he claims that the latest strategy is succeeding. He supported the decision to go to war and is a key backer of the troop increase. Also he is willing to have permanent U.S. peacekeeping forces in Iraq and says that the Iraq war is "a fight between right and wrong, good and evil."

8. Economy: He would purchase troubled mortgages directly from financial institutions and restructure them. He wants to cut the capital gains tax rate. He blames lobbyists for the financial crisis. He would make Bush tax cuts permanent, cut corporate taxes, and repeal the alternative minimum tax. Also McCain proposes more domestic oil drilling, building 45 nuclear power plants, and investing $2 billion a year to develop clean-coal technology.

9. Poverty: McCain voted for a bill to increase the federal minimum wage in February 2007, but he has historically voted against minimum wage increases, arguing that they can hurt small businesses. Also he has promised to make the eradication of poverty a top administration priority.

10. Stem Cell Rsearch: He opposes embryonic stem cell research that uses cloned human embryos, but voted to allow research using human embryos left over from fertility treatments.
